Does Spotify Require AI Disclosure? AI Credits Explained (2026)

Updated 2026-10-21 · 5 sources

Short answer

AI credits on Spotify are optional and in beta. You add them through your distributor (only some distributors support them) by marking specific roles, such as lyrics, vocals, instrumental performance or production, as AI-generated. They appear in song credits and the Now Playing view on mobile, not as a label on the whole track. Spotify also bars AI vocal impersonation unless the artist has authorized it.

How AI credits work

  • AI credits mark individual roles, not the whole track. Spotify gives lyrics, vocals, instrumental performances and production as examples [1].
  • If both AI and a human contributed to the same role, credit them separately [1].
  • They're currently beta, mobile-only, shown in song credits and Now Playing, not on artist profiles or as track labels [1].
  • You add them through your distributor; only certain distributors support them [1].
  • If an artist's public identity is AI-generated, it can self-disclose as an AI Persona in Spotify for Artists [1].

What else Spotify enforces

In September 2025 Spotify announced a music spam filter (targeting mass uploads, duplicates, SEO tricks and artificially short tracks) and an impersonation policy that only allows vocal impersonation when the impersonated artist has authorized it [2]. Its October 2026 update says AI Personas are excluded from recommendations by default [3].

How it connects to DDEX

Distributors deliver to stores in DDEX ERN. Version 4.3.2 added a ContainsAI flag (None, Partly or All) for sound recordings, releases, images, text and video [4], and an AiContribution value for contributors [5]. Use the AI disclosure builder to work out the values and credit lines for your release.

FAQ

Will disclosing AI get my track down-ranked?

Spotify said in 2025 that its disclosure approach is not about down-ranking tracks. Separately, its October 2026 update says AI Personas are excluded from recommendations by default. That applies to artists whose public identity is AI-generated.

If a track has no AI credit, does that mean no AI was used?

No. AI credits are optional, so a missing credit doesn't mean no AI was involved.

Do I need to disclose AI mastering or a plugin?

Spotify's examples focus on parts generated with AI: lyrics, vocals, instrumentation and production. The builder treats AI-assisted mixing or mastering as not changing ContainsAI on its own. Check your distributor's own policy too.
